An excerpt from Chapter I

A short passage from the introduction on the search for a new sound.

Introduction — A New Acoustic World

“Almost every composer yearns for new music. And if we were to consider ‘composer’ in the absolute sense — that is, one whose work transcends all temporal, spatial, and cultural barriers — it follows that he would pursue a new sound, perhaps even a new acoustic world.”

“Western music, in its very nature, changes like an organism that constantly evolves. Old music is stretched and transformed to become new, and new music very quickly becomes old.”

“My story begins in Vienna, where I was studying music theory and composition… Professor Hueber was quite the character and certainly a man of many talents.”

“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.” (Psalms 69:30–31)
